Robert Mueller’s team subpoenas Paul Manafort’s former lawyer, spokesman

Special counsel Robert Mueller issued subpoenas for former campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s previous lawyer and current spokesperson, according to a report Tuesday evening.

The federal investigators requested documents and testimony from Akin Gump attorney Melissa Laurenza, who represented Manafort until recently, and his spokesman Jason Maloni, CNN reported.

The subpoenaing of a lawyer is not standard because it interferes with attorney-client privilege issues. However, Mueller’s team has issued dozens of subpoenas as the probe escalated over the last few months.

Manafort is being investigated for potential tax and financial crimes related to his work for the previous ruling party in Ukraine but has not been formally accused of committing any crimes. He is being represented by Kevin Downing, a former Department of Justice prosecutor whose expertise is in tax issues.

Maloni declined to comment on this story to the Washington Examiner.

Earlier Tuesday, Donald Trump Jr. agreed to take part in a transcribed interview with the Senate Judiciary Committee in response to a chain of emails he released that confirmed he and other associates met with Russian citizens at Trump Tower in Manhattan last June.

The FBI raided Manafort’s Alexandria, Va., home last month after obtaining a search warrant for documents, including tax records. Manafort was not warned about the bust, which took place before sunrise on July 26.

Editor’s note: The story has been corrected. A prior version incorrectly states that Jason Maloni is under investigation for possible financial crimes.
