Electrical fire forces move of DCPS students

Students at Payne Elementary School were relocated to a nearby high school on Friday after an electrical fire cut power to the elementary’s campus.

A transformer fire Thursday evening forced the evacuation of the afterschool program at the east Capitol Hill campus. No students were injured, D.C. Public Schools officials said.

While utility crews worked at Payne on Friday, the school’s 245 students were taken to Eastern High School, which has only a freshman class this year and so has classroom space available.

Buses will transport Payne students back to their home school from Eastern at the end of the school day. School officials expect power to be restored at Payne on Monday.

Eastern recently provided a temporary home to students at School Without Walls after the that school’s chimney and bell tower were damaged in August’s earthquake.
