WASHINGTON (AP) — A Democrat close to U.S. Sen. John Walsh’s campaign says the senator is dropping out of the race amid allegations that he plagiarized large portions of a college research paper.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss Walsh’s plans.
The Democrat’s decision gives a boost to Republican Rep. Steve Daines, who is leaving his House seat for a Senate run.
The state Democratic Party now has until Aug. 20 to hold a nominating convention of party leaders and statewide elected officials to choose a replacement candidate.
A U.S. Army War College investigation begins Aug. 15 into whether Walsh plagiarized portions of a 2007 research paper.
