Drag queens to make Super Bowl debut in hummus ad

Two drag queens who were contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race will make history on Super Bowl Sunday, becoming the first drag queens to appear in one of the game’s highly prized advertisement slots.

Sabra Hummus released a 15-second teaser titled “Helmet Hair,” which features drag queens Miz Cracker and Kim Chi.

“I hope this doesn’t give me helmet hair,” Miz Cracker jokes as she struggles to squish a football helmet over a blonde wig.

This year’s Super Bowl will be played on Feb. 2 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. Companies spend upward of $6 million on 30-second advertisement spots. Close to 100 million people are expected to tune in to the game.

“For queer audiences, it is an art form and an ‘outsiders’ language,” said Bob Witek, a gay and transgender marketing strategist. “Reaching the Super Bowl means taking our language into every home in the nation and millions around the world.”

Katie Sowers, the San Francisco 49ers offensive assistant coach, will also be the first openly gay and female coach to appear in the Super Bowl.
