Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, came to the defense of his opponent after Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and his wife, Heidi, were heckled at a Washington restaurant by protesters Monday.
O’Rourke urged those who oppose Cruz to treat his family with respect.
“Not right that Senator Cruz and his wife Heidi were surrounded and forced to leave a restaurant last night because of protesters. The Cruz family should be treated with respect,” he tweeted Tuesday.

Protesters who oppose Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh confronted the couple at Italian restaurant Fiola.
“We believe survivors!” they chanted, referring to the women accusing Kavanaugh of sexual assault.
“Vote no on Kavanaugh!” a protester added. “Cancel Kavanaugh for women’s rights.”
Cruz responded, “God bless you,” to the demonstrators and asked that they let his wife through as the couple tried to leave.
