Tuition increasing at Virginia community colleges

Students at Virginia’s community colleges will pay about $9.50 more per credit hour next year, bringing the total cost of a typical school year to more than $3,500.

This year, in-state students pay $109.50 per credit hour. Next year, they’ll pay $119. The rate increase was set Thursday by the State Board of Community Colleges, which oversees the commonwealth’s 23-school system.

Tuition would’ve crept even higher had it not been for more than $9 million in additional state funding for next year, according to the Associated Press.

The silver lining? The schools might be able to use the money to do something about the thousands of local high school graduates who come to them with inadequate reading and math skills.
