President Trump’s budget would cut the National Institutes of Health’s budget by nearly $6 billion, erasing gains from a bipartisan law signed just three months ago.
Trump’s proposal would cut the NIH’s funding by 20 percent compared to the agency’s current budget. It is part of a broader cut of $15 billion for the Department of Health and Human Services.
It remains to be seen whether all of Trump’s cuts would be approved, and NIH funding generally gets bipartisan support.
Back in December, then-President Obama signed into law the 21st Century Cures Act, which gave the NIH $4.8 billion in additional funding over the next decade.
The funding helped Republicans get Democratic support for the package, which included measures to speed up approval and development of new cures.
