A city man who shot ? and nearly killed ? his girlfriend?s stepfather during a dispute over a utility bill pleaded guilty to six different crimes Tuesday in Baltimore City Circuit Court.
Jonathan Brodie, 25, was sentenced by Judge John Glynn to 35 years in prison for attempting to murder the stepfather, Dewayne Washington, and robbing five stores.
Prosecutors described Brodie as a “one-man crime wave.”
“Him being away for a while will make the streets safer,” Assistant State?s Attorney Joshua Felsen said.
On Dec. 5, 2006 at 5:01 p.m. at the 5100 block of Fairdel Avenue, Washington was in his apartment when Brodie and his girlfriend Brandy Dupree knocked demanded he open his door and tried to force their way into the apartment by kicking down the door.
Brodie and Dupree were upset because her parents had recently moved and were no longer paying for their Baltimore Gas and Electric and telephone bills, prosecutors said.
Brodie pulled out a .32 caliber revolver and fired several shots at Washington, striking him in the arm and thigh ? and then stood over Washington and shot him in the head, prosecutors said.
Washington continues to have brain damage as a result of the gun shot to his head.
“It if had been a higher caliber weapon, it would have killed him,” Felsen said. “This victim has had serious injuries. He wakes up with his arm trembling.”
