“Chess is cool” is not something every student hears from their peers, but for the Wednesday night chess crowd at the Elkridge Branch Library in Howard County, the classic game of wit and strategy also has a social focus.

“It gives your mind an actual challenge,” says Terrance Hall, 14, of Elkridge.
