Is the Shine off Obama?

Jennifer Rubin comments on Hillary’s latest Pennsylvania ad:

Hillary Clinton is now letting Barack Obama have it. Karl Rove, some think, could not have done a harsher ad on Snob-gate. She says in her latest ad that his “I don’t take money from oil companies” line is a lie, or at least an exaggeration, since no one can directly accept corporate money. (A little late, but she’s basically right.) Then, for good measure, she throws in that he voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill. This tells us a few things. First, Clinton thinks Obama’s brand (high-minded, honest, decent) is scuffed up and she’s going to make sure it gets permanently damaged. This is a character ad, the first one she’s used. Before learning about Snob-gate and Reverend Wright no one would have bought it. Now Clinton is hoping they will.

I commented the other day on the likely effect of Obama losing his halo: a new round of attacks on Obama the person, with the likelihood that they would be more effective than in the past. Here’s the first one. Before bittergate, could Hillary have gotten away with an ad whose central message was ‘Barack Obama isn’t telling the truth?’ Obama’s San Francisco misstep will lend credence to a whole new line of attacks: elitist, untested, and slick. The ongoing Rezko trial could do more damage — particularly if evidence emerges that Obama has a connection to Iraqi billionaire Nadhmi Auchi that he has not yet acknowledged. Even if the primary is too far along to allow Senator Clinton to secure the Democratic nomination, McCain will be able to take advantage of it in the general election.
