Republican lawmakers appear to have been duped by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen into making a advertisement endorsing a fake program to teach firearm use to children who are as young as three years of age.
In the first episode of his new series “Who is America?” Cohen plays the part of an Israeli anti-terrorism expert, who tricks American politicians to voice support for “Kinderguardians” learning how to defend themselves in the case of a school shooting.
Reps. Joe Wilson and Dana Rohrabacher endorse the satiric firearm education. Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott and former Rep. Joe Walsh also make appearances in the the first episode. All those involved said they had not seen the finished episode before it was shown to audiences, according to Reuters.
Baron Cohen has received ire from multiple political figures on both sides of the aisle after they realized they may have been fooled by the comedian for the filming of his latest project, which premieres Sunday evening on Showtime.
“This ‘comedian’ is obviously very good at lying, at duping people. … Look at the long list of men coming out [saying] ‘me too,’” former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said during a stint on ABC’s “Good Morning America” after it was revealed Cohen had gotten her to participate in a fake interview in which he posed as a disabled veteran and insisted that Chelsea Clinton had received a sex change.
Other names such as Former Vice President Dick Cheney, former Alabama judge Roy Moore, and Sen. Bernie Sanders have popped up in the list of political figures who Cohen has swindled.
