A fugitive who was wanted for allegedly making bootleg copies of computer software was arrested at Washington Dulles International Airport, authorities said.
Naveed Sheikh, 31, knew he was being investigated and had left for Pakistan shortly before he was indicted on Jan. 13, 2011. He was arrested Wednesday at the airport when he was trying to re-enter the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland.
Sheikh, formerly of Baltimore, took in more than $265,000 for reproducing and distributing more than 100 copyrighted software programs from February 2004 to April 2008, according to the indictment in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
These copyrighted software programs included Microsoft Money 2006 Small Business, Adobe After Effects Pro 7.0, Veritas NetBackUp Pro 5.1, Solid Works Office 2000 Premium, Quicken Premier Home and Business 2006 and Apple iLife 2006, the indictment stated.
Sheikh had his initial appearance in Federal Court in Alexandria on Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said, and he has a detention hearing in that court on Friday.
