Millions slotted for East Baltimore

Mayor Sheila Dixon, state officials and community leaders will gather Dec. 9 to celebrate a $10 million private investment fund for rebuilding East Baltimore and the 30th anniversary of BUILD, or Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development. More than 30 churches in the Baltimore area are members of BUILD.

The 4 p.m. anniversary celebration will take place at Memorial Baptist Church, 1311 N. Caroline St. in Baltimore. Rev. Calvin Keene, pastor of Memorial Baptist Church, serves as the co-chair of BUILD. For more information, call 410-675-2585.

Towson, Timonium churches bring wells of hope to Africa, Baltimore

About 80 percent of Baltimore residents infected with HIV or AIDS are poverty-stricken, according to the Grace Fellowship Church and Central Presbyterian, two churches who joined forces to help local and international HIV/AIDS patients. Grace Fellowship is a nondenominational church of 4,000 located in Timonium. Central Presbyterian, with 1,200 members, is located in Towson.

Their joint ministry, called the HopeSprings partnership, provides holistic care for Baltimore patients.

HopeSprings also helps communities with HIV/AIDS as far away as Malawi, Africa.

There, volunteers have raised $45,295 to drill wells to bring clean water to over 60,000 people.

Baltimore enjoys last night of miracles

In front of the dazzling, decorated Hanukkah House, Baltimore will celebrate the last night of Hanukah, the Festival of Lights, on Dec. 11 from 7 to 8 p.m. Festivities include a menorah-lighting ceremony, balloon art, face painting, comedic jugglers, arts and craft projects, and jelly-doughnut decorating.

The Comprehensive Housing Assistance Inc. and the Mayor?s Office of Neighborhoods are sponsoring the free event. The Hanukkah House is located at 6211 Park Heights Avenue in Baltimore. For more information, call 410-466-1990.

Hanukkah Sock Hop

A Neil Diamond impersonator is just one part of the fun planned for the Hanukkah Sock Hop, presented by Baltimore?s Moses Montefiore Anshe Emunah Hebrew Congregation. Admission to the Dec. 8 event is $36 in advance and $40 at the door. Price includes dinner and live band. The Sock Hop starts at 8 p.m. at 7000 Rockland Hills Drive in Baltimore.
