GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump increased his lead over rival Republican candidate Ted Cruz among likely California primary voters to 34 points, according to KABC poll released Monday.
Trump received 54 percent of likely Republican voters’ support. Cruz followed with 20 percent and Ohio Gov. John Kasich finished with 14 percent.
The New York businessman jumped 14 points since last month’s poll when Trump and Cruz received 40 and 32 percent, respectively.
The Golden State primary is not until June 7, but Trump’s strong showing could put him in position to win most of the state’s 172 delegates.
The new numbers indicate Trump may be on an upswing in the state since a RealClearPolitics average — including this new poll — had had him 26 point above Cruz.
Trump’s significant jump among Californians comes nearly a week after winning five primary states. According to the latest tally, the front-running candidate has locked in 996 delegates.
