Pelosi spokesman denouncing Steve King’s ‘vile’ comments on immigrants

A spokesman for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called Rep. Steve King’s weekend tweets and comments about babies born to illegal immigrants “vile racism” and “disgusting hatred.”

“The GOP leadership must stop accommodating this garbage, and condemn Congressman Steve King’s statements in the strongest and most unequivocal terms,” spokesman Drew Hammill said. “Speaker Ryan and the House Republican Leadership must decide whether white supremacy is welcome in the GOP ranks.”

Hammill also said King is an “emboldened” racist.

King, R-Iowa, a staunch opponent of illegal immigration, tweeted Sunday “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.”

On Monday he responded to criticism by explaining his tweet, but did not walk it back, and said he is advocating better immigrant assimilation.

“You cannot rebuild your civilization with somebody else’s babies,” King told CNN. “You’ve got to keep your birth rate up, and that you need to teach your children your values.”
