Clinton makes gains, holds lead in key battleground states

Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump in three key battleground states and is tied in another, having made gains as she looks to solidify her positioning ahead of November’s general election, according to new polling of likely voters,

According to new Quinnipiac polls released Monday, Clinton tops the GOP nominee in Florida, Pennsylvania and Colorado, and is tied in Ohio. The polls were conducted from Oct. 10-16, after a video was released showing Trump making lurid comments about women, followed by multiple allegations of sexual assault against the GOP nominee.

In Florida, Clinton leads with 48 percent support to 44 percent for Trump, a 4-point advantage. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson also earns 4 percent. Clinton also holds a 6-point lead over the GOP nominee in Pennsylvania, taking 47 percent to Trump’s 41 percent, while Johnson pulls 6 percent. For Clinton, she has seen her lead expand by 2 points in both states in the past two weeks since Quinnipiac’s previous poll.

Clinton also saw her lead expand in Colorado, where she led by only 2 points in the previous poll. She currently leads Trump by 8 points, taking 45 percent to Trump’s 37 percent. Trump’s support level fell by 5 points over the past two weeks as new allegations surfaced.

The two major-party nominees are also deadlocked at 45 percent in Ohio. However, Clinton also saw her numbers improve in the Buckeye State, where she was trailing 47-42 two weeks ago.

Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio are three of the four states the Trump campaign is focused on intently and are key to his electoral success on Nov. 8, with North Carolina being the other one. The campaign recently moved resources out of Virginia, which has been a key battleground state in recent years.

In all four states, Clinton saw her support levels among independent voters surge, likely accounting for her uptick in the polls over the past two weeks.
