At least three California high school students were hospitalized after doing the “One Chip Challenge.”
The challenge is an online trend in which people eat a single spicy tortilla chip made with Carolina Reapers and Scorpion peppers and then post their reactions.
The chip costs $20, and the company that manufactures it, Paqui, dares people to eat the hot sauce-covered and pepper-infused snack.

Several teenagers who ate one had to receive medical treatment.
“A lot of kids follow their peers, even if they don’t know what it is. They don’t know the consequence,” Elena Holvo, a concerned mother, told KMAX.

Roughly nine students at Lodi High School performed the challenge, and three were hospitalized.
“Those two peppers have been rated as 2 million Scoville units, and jalapeño is somewhere around 5,000, so they are about 400 times hotter than a jalapeño,” Dr. Bret Christiansen, a pediatrician, told the outlet.

One can experience burning and digestive tract pain after eating the chip, Christiansen said.
“It can be pretty severe after a short time, similar to a reaction like an asthmatic might have with bronchial spasms, and if they have persistent vomiting, they could need IV hydration or medications to stop the vomiting,” he said.

The challenge and chip have been banned at Lodi High School, according to the principal, and those caught in possession of the chip will be sent home.
