The 3-minute interview: Luke Young

Nearly 2,000 Army servicemembers from the Aberdeen Proving Ground packed the Baltimore/Washington InternationalThurgood Marshall Airport early Sunday morning on their way home for holiday leave. Many soldiers were young and had just arrived at Aberdeen after basic training.

Pvt. Luke Young, 22, of Salt Lake City, who is a generator repairman, chatted with The Examiner while relaxing before his flight.

Why did you join the Army?

I joined for job training and to help my mom, who needs surgery. She needs a hip replacement, kneecap replacement and a heart valve.

What have you learned about yourself in the Army?

I?m a lot tougher than I thought. I really didn?t think I could do as many push-ups as I could do. I also have more patience than I knew.

What are your plans over your holiday break?

I?m going to spend time with my family and friends. I haven?t seen my 23-year-old brother in a year and a half.

What are your hobbies?

I like target shooting. But when I was younger, my mom didn?t like any kinds of firearms.

What are your future plans?

I?m on reserve duty now and may be thinking about going on active duty.
