Leslie Johnson charged with witness, evidence tampering

Prince George’s County Councilwoman Leslie Johnson is facing new federal charges of conspiracy to commit witness and evidence tampering after a FBI raid of her home in November.

Prosecutors said Johnson was caught trying to conceal bribes obtained by her husband, then County Executive Jack Johnson.

Leslie Johnson, 59, of Mitchellville, was elected but not sworn into office at the time of her November arrest.

The criminal information filing replaces a criminal complaint already filed against Johnson and clears the way for an impending plea.

Johnson was not indicted, but charged by federal prosecutors by criminal information. A court date has not been scheduled.

Hardy Vieux, an attorney for Johnson, could not be reached for comment.

Prosecutors said in court documents that Leslie Johnson not only refused to open the door of her home to federal agents, but she also destroyed a $100,000 check in bribes from a developer to her husband and hid $79,600 in cash in her underwear.

The FBI recorded Jack Johnson telling his wife to hide the cash in her bra and underwear.

She faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the charges, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
