Kirsten Gillibrand: ‘I don’t know’ if Trump was also making sexist remarks to Mitt Romney

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., insisted Wednesday that President Trump’s attack against her was a “sexist smear,” but said she didn’t know if Trump was also using sexual innuendo when he made a similar attack against Mitt Romney in 2016.

“I don’t know,” Gillibrand said when asked whether the Romney incident was also a “sexist attack.”

Gillibrand argued that Trump has “often berated women,” which was what caused her to believe his tweet Tuesday had a sexual tone to it.

On Tuesday morning, Trump claimed Gillibrand used to beg him for money and would “do anything” for campaign cash, before teaming up with fellow New York senator, Chuck Schumer, against him.

“Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office ‘begging’ for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump. Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!” Trump tweeted.

In 2016, Trump said Mitt Romney “would have dropped to his knees” to help with his campaign, which could also be read as being heavy with sexual innuendo.

Gillibrand also dodged a question about whether Trump deserved to be tough with her after she called for his resignation.

“The president says whatever he wants whenever he wants. I don’t think that level of discourse, however, is what this country wants,” Gillibrand said.

Gillibrand has joined other Democrats who have said Trump needs to step down after several women reiterated their claims that Trump sexually harassed them. On Monday, three of his accusers appeared on NBC’s “Today with Megyn Kelly” to discuss Trump’s inappropriate sexual advances.

In response, Gillibrand called on Trump to resign.

“These allegations are credible, they are numerous,” Gillibrand told CNN. “I’ve heard these women’s testimony, and many of them are heartbreaking. President Trump should resign his position.”
