D.C. Council shutters meeting about open meetings

The D.C. Council is planning a training session about open meetings… in a closed meeting.

The council will hold its annual retreat on Tuesday at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and a draft agenda from Council Chairman Kwame Brown’s office shows that the gathering’s morning session will be used for training. Lawmakers will hear from an attorney about ethics, the Freedom of Information Act and open meetings.

But the media advisory about the event notes that the training session will be closed to the public. The afternoon portion of the retreat, which will focus on past accomplishments and goals for 2012, will be open.

The District’s open meetings law allows agencies to close sessions for training purposes.
