Julie Mason, who for the last eight years has covered national politics and the White House for the Houston Chronicle, is joining The Washington Examiner as White House correspondent.

“Mason is a resourceful reporter, a graceful writer, and a generous colleague,” said Stephen G. Smith, executive editor of The Examiner. “She has wide experience not only in print, but also as a blogger and television commentator.”

Before taking over the Chronicle’s White House beat in 2005, Mason worked as the newspaper’s national political correspondent based in the Washington bureau and covered John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign.

She is also a political analyst for MSNBC and has appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” and “Nightly News,” CNN, NPR, CBS and “Nightline.”

Mason joined the Chronicle in 1989 after three years at the Dallas Morning News. As a Texas-based reporter for the Chronicle, she covered local and state politics and government, courts, and the Texas Legislature. She also hosted a political talk show on Houston radio.

“Julie will help The Examiner reinforce its position as a strong, alternative voice in Washington,” Smith said.
