Amber Heard files to appeal defamation verdict in Johnny Depp case

Amber Heard filed a “notice of intent to appeal” the verdict in her defamation suit against ex-husband Johnny Depp in Fairfax County, Virginia, on Thursday.

Since the jury released its verdict, finding all three of Depp’s defamation claims and one of Heard’s claims worthy of varying compensation, Heard had until July 24 to appeal it. The jury awarded Depp $10.35 million in compensatory and punitive damages and awarded Heard $2 million in compensatory damages.

Heard’s lawyers will have until Sept. 4 to file their appeal, complete with arguments.

Previously, Heard attempted to motion for an entirely new trial on the basis of “improper juror service,” which Judge Penney Azcarate dismissed. Heard’s lawyers wanted to dismiss the verdict on account of one juror who was found to have the same name and live at the same address as his older relative, who the jury summons was allegedly intended for. Azcarate ruled the man had still been vetted and produced a proper verdict.

Depp recently settled yet another lawsuit against him, this time over an assault claim. A former crew member on Depp’s film City of Lies took an undisclosed settlement amount to dismiss his lawsuit against the actor.
