John Fetterman defends debate performance against Oz in interview with CNN’s Don Lemon

Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D-PA) defended his much-discussed debate performance against Dr. Mehmet Oz in an interview.

Fetterman, who is locked in a tight battle for the crucial Senate seat, told CNN’s Don Lemon he knew the debate “wasn’t going to be easy” but still felt like it served a purpose.

“I just always understood that it wasn’t going to be easy. I am five months into recovery from that, but I thought it was important that I show up and I did it. And at the end of the day, we did, I think, make some important points,” Fetterman told CNN.

Lt. Gov. John Fetterman speaks onstage during a neighborhood rally at Temple University in North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 29, 2022.

The interview comes ahead of an appearance on The View this week as the Democratic candidate tries to recover from the debate.

Fetterman is slightly favored to win the seat held by retiring Sen. Pat Toomey (R). Fetterman is leading Oz in the polls by less than 1.5 points, on average. A survey released Monday from the New York Times/Siena College put Fetterman 5 points ahead.

The race is crucial in deciding which party controls the Senate, which is currently split 50-50. Republicans need a net gain of just one seat in order to win a majority in the upper chamber.

The Democrat has brushed off his poor performance in the debate previously, telling a rally last week: “So I may not say everything perfectly sometimes, but I’ll always do the right thing if you send me to Washington, D.C.”
