Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will not be announcing his running mate until the Republican National Convention kicks off in July.
Trump made the revelation to the Associated Press in an interview earlier Thursday, simply telling them he’ll wait until then and that many are “interested” in the position.
“It is early — we just won yesterday,” Trump said. “I will announce it at the convention. A lot of people are interested.”
The comment from the real estate mogul also comes on the same day as him telling Fox News that Sen. Marco Rubio is someone who “could” be his pick, but nixing South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley from any discussion about the position.
“No, not Nikki Haley. No, Nikki Haley, no. She wasn’t under consideration,” Trump told Fox News’ Bret Baier in an interview set to air in its entirety Thursday night.
“You know we always had a very good relationship … Marco and I, and then it got a little bit nasty for a period of time,” Trump said. “And then we had the election. And you know, that was a tough period of time for Marco. Marco’s a good guy, a really nice guy, and I like him. But not necessarily with respect to any position. But it could happen.”
On Wednesday, Trump revealed that Ben Carson would be amongst those heading up the search for a vice presidential candidate, with Haley, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez widely mentioned as possibilities for the role. All of them shot down speculation and removed themselves from consideration.
