Newly re-elected House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to House Democrats late Wednesday announcing changes to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in response to party infighting.
Pelosi committed to supporting the DCCC chair, as well as adding five new leadership spots to the committee – two of which would go to junior members as a means of including novice lawmakers within the party.
“It has been suggested that the DCCC chair be elected by the full Caucus, and that is an amendment I support,” Pelosi wrote in the letter, reported by Politico. “There were also suggestions to have either three or five DCCC Regional Vice Chairs. I have supported the five Regional Vice Chairs. It is up to the Members to decide the regions.”
The California congresswoman put up a considerable fight against Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan in his challenge for her top House leadership slot on Wednesday. Nearly one-third of the 197 House Democrats voted for Ryan to take over Pelosi’s responsibilities and 134 members stuck with the incumbent.
New Mexico Rep. Ben Ray Lujan is expected to stay on as DCCC chairman this cycle.
