Sanders, Clinton meet after D.C. primary polls close

Bernie Sanders paid Hillary Clinton a visit Tuesday evening after the polls closed for the Washington, D.C. primary.

Sanders walked into a downtown D.C. hotel with his wife, Jane Sanders, to meet the former secretary of state around the same time the Associated Press called the Democratic Party’s final primary in favor of Clinton.

The visit marked the first time the two candidates have met since Clinton earned the number of delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination.

Following the meeting, which reportedly took nearly two hours, the Sanders campaign put out a statement saying the senator congratulated Clinton on her latest primary victory.

The two had a “positive discussion” focusing on getting out the vote, a variety of issues “where they are seeking common ground” and the “dangerous threat that Donald Trump poses to our nation,” the statement added.

“Sanders and Clinton agreed to continue working to develop a progressive agenda that addresses the needs of working families and the middle class and adopting a progressive platform for the Democratic National Convention,” Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs concluded.

Sanders, despite trailing Clinton by hundreds of pledged delegates and superdelegates, has stated he intends to stay in the race until the Democratic convention in July.
