President Trump is reportedly planning to threaten Mexico with new sanctions in order to encourage the country to crack down on illegal border crossings of migrants coming from Central America.
Trump said Thursday morning he would be making a major statement on immigration in the coming days, noting it would be his “biggest statement so far on the border.”
The announcement on new tariffs could come Friday, but some of Trump’s aides are trying to talk him down from the decision, expressing concerns about the impact to financial markets and the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade, the Washington Post reports.
Despite the concerns, the White House appears to be moving ahead with the planned announcement and aides are reportedly meeting Thursday to hammer out the details of its implementation.
The news comes a day after the Border Patrol apprehended more than 1,000 unauthorized immigrants in Texas, the largest group ever taken into custody at once.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner.
