More AA students up for Merit scholarships

More Anne Arundel public high school students were chosen this year as semifinalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship competition.

Eleven students, up from six last year, were selected from more than 1.4 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools nationwide who were top scorers on the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The students are Mary Huang, Robert Minter, Peter Thompson and Victoria Vidal, all of Severna Park High School; Elleena Grove, Eric Lynn and Anne Thompson, all of Old Mill High School; Stephen Guth of Annapolis High School; John Fernandes of Broadneck High School; Matthew Phipps of Chesapeake High School; and Victoria Jones of Southern High School.

About 90 semifinalists will advance to the finalist stage, where they will be considered for one the 2,500 National Merit Scholarships worth $2,500 each.
