Matthew McConaughey would be ‘formidable’ Texas governor candidate: Ted Cruz

Sen. Ted Cruz acknowledged that actor Matthew McConaughey would be a “formidable candidate” if he decided to run for governor of Texas.

“I hope Matthew decides not to run” against incumbent GOP Gov. Greg Abbott because “I am a big fan of Greg Abbott. He was my boss for five-and-a-half years. He’s a close friend and mentor,” the Texas Republican said.

Cruz made the comments during Thursday’s episode on the Hugh Hewitt Show.

Abbott is up for reelection in 2022, and McConaughey, a Texas native and Austin resident, has floated the idea of a bid, although he has been coy as to whether he’d run as a Democrat or a Republican.

“He’s a very charming, very affable guy,” Cruz said of the actor. “He’s a movie star, and a good-looking, charming, affable movie star can be a really formidable candidate on the ballot. And I hope that doesn’t happen, but you know what? He’s going to have to make his own decision whether he’s going to run or not.”

No Democrat has held statewide office in Texas since before the turn of the century.
