Man who purchased rifle for Rittenhouse reaches plea agreement

The attorney for the man who purchased the rifle for Kyle Rittenhouse signed a plea agreement with the state of Wisconsin to dismiss two felony charges against him.

If the judge signs off, Dominick Black’s plea deal will result in a noncriminal citation, according to court documents filed Friday. He will be required to pay a fine of $2,000.

Black was charged in 2020 on two counts of providing a firearm to a minor. He purchased an AR-15-style rifle for Rittenhouse, who was 17 years old when he brought the gun to a riot in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rittenhouse was too young to purchase the gun legally at the time.

In May, Black pleaded not guilty to the charges. His lawyers argued that if it was legal for Rittenhouse to possess a gun, it was not necessarily a crime for Black to give him one, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Black was the first witness to testify in Rittenhouse’s trial last year. Rittenhouse previously said he used his $1,200 stimulus check to pay for the gun.

Black and Rittenhouse said in court that they agreed Black would have the rifle until Rittenhouse turned 18. Black kept it in a safe at his stepfather’s house in Kenosha.

His stepfather told police that he moved the gun out of his safe during the unrest in the area, according to the Kenosha News. Rittenhouse was able to retrieve the unsecured gun and head to the protests.

Rittenhouse fatally shot two people and injured another during a riot over the nonfatal shooting of Jacob Black in 2020. A jury ruled Rittenhouse acted in self-defense and acquitted him of five criminal charges in November of last year.
