The View’s Joy Behar slammed President Trump and his supporters in regard to the president’s response to a question from an Asian American White House correspondent.
During a press conference on Monday, Trump told CBS reporter Weijia Jiang, who was born in China and was raised in West Virginia, to direct a question about global competition on testing and vaccines amid continued COVID-19 deaths to China. Jiang asked, “Why are you saying that to me, specifically?”
The exchange ultimately led to Trump abruptly ending the press conference. Behar, while addressing the incident on Tuesday’s show, said it was evidence that Trump is “a disgusting racist.”
“You know what, Whoopi? We all know now that he’s a racist. He’s a disgusting racist. We knew it when he attacked Mexicans,” she said, referencing the president’s speech announcing his 2016 candidacy for president. “We knew it when he defended Charlottesville people, and we know it when he goes after China and he goes after a Chinese American girl. He is a racist.”
Behar then commented on Trump’s supporters, saying, “He throws red meat to his base on a regular basis, and anybody who still supports this guy needs to look in the mirror and ask themselves if they are racist also. That’s all I have to say about him. I’ve had enough of him.”
Ana Navarro, a frequent fill-in host for The View, indirectly pushed back on Behar, saying that “he’s an equal opportunity jerk.”
“He can be a jerk to [CNN White House correspondent] Jim Acosta and to [Playboy White House correspondent] Brian Karem. We’ve seen the way he treated April Ryan, saying, ‘Well, you know, go ask your friends in the Black Caucus,’ basically,” she said.
Trump has defended Asian Americans after reports that hate crimes and harassment toward them were on the rise because of the pandemic.
