Ohio Gov. John Kasich is dropping out of the 2016 presidential race, a move that leaves Donald Trump as the last Republican candidate and presumptive GOP nominee.
A senior campaign adviser told NBC News that Kasich will suspend his campaign in a statement from Columbus, Ohio at 5 p.m. Eastern time. The Washington Examiner confirmed Kasich is leaving the race.
Kasich’s decision comes after he vowed to stay in the 2016 race, despite winning only one primary state throughout the contest, Ohio. He was mathematically eliminated long ago, but said he would continue his campaign in hopes of deterring Trump’s quest for 1,237 delegates.
Though only capturing 153 delegates, numerous national polls showed he would be the only GOP candidate able to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton in a general election matchup.
Kasich’s move comes just hours after Cruz dropped out of the race Tuesday night, after coming in second place to Trump in Indiana.
