More Maryland students won college scholarships from the National Carson Scholars Fund, a nonprofit honoring academic and humanitarian excellence, than in any other state in the country.
The Old Line State boasts 128 winners of the $1,000 awards, which can be won repeatedly through grades four to 11. Virginia houses three winners, while the District has 10.
Montgomery County Public Schools put out a release Monday morning announcing that 23 of the winners were theirs. Eight were first-time winners, while 15 students — as young as seventh-graders — were repeat scholars. Two students, including a high school freshman, were recognized for the fourth time.
Founded in 1994 by a Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon, the Carson Scholars Fund will honor these student winners at a banquet on April 10 at Martin’s West in Woodlawn, Md.
