Bed bugs return to 3 Montgomery County fire stations

Some Montgomery County firefighters have been a little itchy lately as a result of recent bed bug infestations at three Montgomery County fire stations.

The infestations at the Germantown Volunteer Fire Department, Laytonsville Volunteer Fire Department and Burtonsville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department last month come less than a year after two stations completed a three-part treatment for bed bug infestations and about a year after another station was infested.

The most recent infestations have been resolved, according to Assistant Chief Scott Graham, spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, though that didn’t stop Chief Richard Bowers from sending all firefighters materials about preventing future infestations.

Bed bug infestations are common in places like fire stations where people are sleeping in shared space, Graham said, adding that the county has turned to Marriott for help with best practices in warding off bed bugs, since hotels are often common bed-bug breeding grounds.
