Virginia Railway Express named its rail services director as acting chief executive officer on Tuesday while the agency searches for a permanent replacement.
Current CEO Dale Zehner plans to retire on June 30 from the commuter train service that shuttles riders from as far as Manassas and Fredericksburg to Washington-area jobs.
Starting on July 1, Richard Dalton will take his place, according to the service.
Dalton, who joined VRE in 2009 after a naval career, now serves as director of rail equipment and services.
“The board felt very comfortable that he was the right fit to continue moving VRE forward while the board continues the selection process for the chief executive position,” VRE operations board Chairman Wally Covington said.
