Andy Murray’s tweet mocking Trump’s Time boast is a grand slam on Twitter

British tennis star Andy Murray is going viral online for a tweet mocking President Trump.

Trump tweeted Friday evening that Time magazine called him to say he would “probably” be the magazine’s “Man (Person) of the Year,” but he rejected the offer because he would have to agree to an interview and photo shoot.

Soon after, Murray, a three-time Grand Slam tournament winner, sent out a nearly identical tweet, swapping only Time for BBC and “Person of the Year” for “sports personality of the year.”

As of 9:20 a.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, Murray’s tweet has been retweeted 45,000 times and “liked” 190,000 times. Murray, who only has 3.7 million followers is outpacing Trump, who boasts 43.3 million followers.

Trump’s claim has been denied by Time.

“The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year. TIME does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6,” the publication tweeted Friday evening.

A different Murray – Alan Murray, Time’s chief content officer and president of Fortune –called Trump’s boast “Total BS,” adding that there is “[n]ot a speck of truth here.”
