Comey softens stance on impeachment after advising against it

Former FBI Director James Comey indicated that he may support the impeachment of President Trump after he advised Democrats to let the American people decide his fate in 2020.

“Some media are quoting me from last week about my hope that America will remove Donald Trump by an election, not impeachment. But we may now be at the point where members of the House and Senate can’t uphold their own oaths to support and defend the Constitution without acting,” Comey tweeted Wednesday.

Days earlier, Comey said he hoped the Democratic-led House would not impeach Trump because “the American people would be let off the hook” and Trump supporters “would think some sort of coup had taken place.”

“We need an inflection point. Impeachment would deprive us of that. We need to show what we stand for,” he said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Tuesday that she supports a formal impeachment inquiry, and the six Democratic-chaired panels, led by the Judiciary Committee, will continue to investigate Trump under the “umbrella of an impeachment inquiry.”

“The president must be held accountable. No one is above the law,” she said.
