Most Americans believe President Trump is unfit to serve as president and think Trump is doing more to divide the country rather than unite it, according to a new poll released Wednesday.
The poll from Quinnipiac University found 56 percent of U.S. voters do not believe Trump is fit to be president, compared to 42 percent who say he is fit.
The question of Trump’s fitness is deeply split along party lines, with nearly all Democrats polled, 94 percent, saying the president is not fit to be commander-in-chief. Among Republican voters, 84 percent believe Trump is fit to serve as president.
Trump’s approval rating remains stuck in the mid-thirties, with 36 percent of American voters approving of the job the president is doing. Fifty-seven percent disapprove of how Trump has done as president.
“There is no upside,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. “With an approval rating frozen in the mid-thirties, his character and judgment questioned, President Donald Trump must confront the harsh fact that the majority of American voters feel he is simply unfit to serve in the highest office in the land.”
Voters feel the president has also struggled with race relations. Sixty-two percent disapprove of Trump’s handling of race relations, compared to 32 percent who approve.
Sixty percent of American voters believe Trump is dividing the country more than he is uniting it.
Trump earned criticism from Republicans and Democrats for failing to denounce specifically the white supremacists, white nationalists, and neo-Nazis who clashed with counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Va., last month.
Trump said, “many sides” were to the blame for the violence,” and said there were “fine people” involved.
The president has also condemned NFL players who kneel for the national anthem, a movement started by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in protest of police brutality and racial injustice.
Trump said Friday that NFL players who take a knee should be kicked off the team, and urged the NFL to implement a rule prohibiting athletes from kneeling during the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
A number of NFL team owners and coaches condemned Trump’s comments, calling them divisive.
