White House: Trump has no regrets for his Comey ‘tapes’ tweet

President Trump doesn’t regret his tweet from last month suggesting he may have secretly recorded former FBI Director James Comey, according to a White House spokesman.

“I don’t think so,” White House deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders said during a briefing with reporters on Thursday when asked if he regretted the post.

Just before Sanders’ briefing, Trump said on Twitter more than a month after suggesting that tapes might exist, “I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings.”

Last month, after firing Comey, Trump tweeted: “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”

Since then, Trump wouldn’t say whether such recordings exist.

Sanders was repeatedly questioned Thursday about why Trump felt the need to suggest he had tapes. “Look, I think the president’s statement via Twitter today is extremely clear,” she said. “I don’t have anything to add beyond the statement.”

Asked if there are any Oval Office recordings, Sanders said: “Not that I’m aware of.”

Sanders said the president made his announcement this week because of a request from Congress. The House Intelligence Committee had asked the White House to turn over any tapes the president may have to the committee by this Friday.
