House Freedom Caucus backs outline of GOP tax plan

The House Freedom Caucus announced Wednesday that it backs the GOP’s framework for tax reform, an important endorsement that boosts the chances of House passage of the plan in the coming weeks.

The group tweeted out its support as Republican lawmakers huddled at a Washington D.C. retreat focused on the GOP tax reform plan.

“President Trump has delivered a forward looking tax reform framework that will let hard working Americans keep more of their money, simplify our system, end carve outs for special interests, and will help make our businesses competitive abroad,” the group said in a statement. “The Freedom Caucus looks forward to sending a final bill based on this framework to President Trump’s desk as soon as possible.”

The Freedom Caucus backing is very important for Republicans. The group is comprised of more than three dozen conservative lawmakers who, when voting together, have the power to block the Republican majority from passing legislation without Democratic support.

Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said Tuesday he will back the plan if the corporate tax rate drops at least to 20 percent, which is the goal in the outline released today.

Republicans must now write the legislation, which conservatives warned could result in higher tax rates or other changes the group would oppose.
