Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said Wednesday that he’s “leaning in [favor of] protecting” America in his vote on CIA director nominee Gina Haspel’s confirmation.
Manchin made the comment to MetroNews, a West Virginia media outlet, on Wednesday. Manchin previously told the Washington Examiner he was waiting for the closed session to make a decision.
“The closed session is going to be the telltale sign because we are going to be able to get into classified things we couldn’t talk about,” Manchin said. “So I’m waiting for that.”
Haspel testified in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill Wednesday, telling the senator that under her, interrogations would not be handled by the CIA.
“I just think there are other U.S. government entities that are suited to holding detainees and that isn’t CIA,” Haspel said in response to one of Manchin’s questions.
