It’s her party: Colbie Caillat on her latest record, portraying Leslie Gore, and the Humane Society

No doubt singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat likes to keep busy. In addition to the July release of her latest album “All of You” and her current tour, Caillat is also making a guest appearance on the new NBC television show “The Playboy Club” and is active with the Humane Society.

Caillat opens for Jason Mraz this Saturday at Merriweather Post Pavilion.

On “The Playboy Club,” a fictionalized series focusing on the employees of Chicago’s famous venue of the same name, Caillat portrays 1960s pop singer Leslie Gore.

“I thought it would be a great opportunity,” said Caillat during a phone interview last month. “I wore the whole ’60s dress and pearls and I had a wig on. It was very fun.”

Gore is best known for the hits “It’s My Party,” “Judy’s Turn to Cry” and “You Don’t Own Me.” Caillat, who performs “It’s My Party” on the show, jumped at the chance.

“I love that song,” Caillat said, adding she might be more open to acting opportunities down the road. “I love a bunch of her songs. I was very excited to play her and rerecord that song.”

Caillat burst onto the scene in 2007 with the hit single “Bubbly,” off her debut album “Coco,” and she won a Grammy for the duet “Lucky” with Mraz. “All of You” is her third full-length effort, following 2009’s “Breakthrough.”

According to Caillat, “All Of You” is about relationships. The album, which has spawned the singles “I Do” and “Brighter Than the Sun,” features a big helping of Caillat’s upbeat, guitar-based, summery pop.

“I had a lot of fun just experimenting on this record and branching out to different styles,” she said.

One of those experiments was the track “Favorite Song,” with Common.

“He is so cool,” Caillat said. “He is seriously one of the nicest guys and so talented. I love the tone of his voice and what he writes about. His lyrics are very positive. I wanted to work with him for years, I love his music. It really is one of my favorite songs. It’s just fun and summery.”

When not addressing her music career, Caillat is a spokeswoman for the Humane Society. When she finds some downtime, she said she’d like to be more involved.

“My parents taught me when I was younger we should adopt animals instead of buying them from a pet store,” Caillat said. “That’s always been a thing I’ve felt strongly about.”
