Melania ‘moved by the strength’ of young patients after making holiday visit to children’s hospital

First lady Melania Trump visited the Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., to spread some Christmas cheer to children battling illnesses during the holidays.

The first lady met dozens of children and took some time to read the book Oliver the Ornament Meets Belle to the group. The book follows the journey of a young Christmas ornament that overcomes bullies to save Christmas and return to his spot on the Christmas tree, which lends itself well to Trump’s “Be Best” campaign aimed at stopping bullying and addressing the opioid crisis.

Her story was met with a warm round of applause from everyone, including Santa and Mrs. Claus, who also attended the event.

“It was a joy to read Oliver the Ornament Meets Belle, to the patients of [Children’s National Hospital] today. I am moved by the strength and resilience of these young children. Wishing the patients and staff at this wonderful hospital a very #MerryChristmas,” the first lady tweeted, including several photographs from her visit.

The holiday party at the hospital is part of a 70-year tradition of bringing special guests to help patients and their families celebrate the season while they receive treatments.
