Disney announced late on Wednesday that it has called off plans to reopen its Disneyland theme park in Southern California.
In a statement released by the entertainment company, the company said it was forced to delay reopening the park indefinitely until clearer guidance is provided by California state officials.
“Given the time required for us to bring thousands of cast members back to work and restart our business, we have no choice but to delay the reopening of our theme parks and resort hotels until we receive approval from government officials,” read the statement from Disney.
Workers concerned about returning to the park amid the coronavirus pandemic have reacted negatively to reopening in July. An online petition on Change.org calling for Disneyland to delay reopening gathered more than 50,000 signatures.
“Once we have a clearer understanding of when guidelines will be released, we expect to be able to communicate a reopening date,” the statement added.
Disney has rolled out a number of new safety restrictions, including requiring all employees and guests who enter the park to wear face masks. The amusement company also announced it would cancel parades and other events that create large crowds within the park.
