On Friday, inventor of the Dean Scream and Hillary Clinton supporter Howard Dean said the Democratic ticket for president needs some youth to prevent it from being too old.
The former Vermont governor made the comments when asked about who should be the party’s vice presidential nominee.
“I strongly believe that we ought to have someone under 50 on the ticket. I think the baby boomers have run this country for too long,” Dean told MSNBC. “We stepped away from that with Barack Obama. We don’t normally go back a generation.”
Hillary Clinton, who will turn 69 before November, is trying to wrap up the Democratic primary against Bernie Sanders, 74, next week.
“I just would like to see a new generation brought into Democratic party politics,” Dean continued. “There are plenty of well-qualified young people who could be vice president.”
When asked, Dean conceded that Senator Elizabeth Warren potentially running for vice president as a show of good faith to the progressive wing of the Democratic party could be “very” helpful, but Dean’s ultimate preference is “the younger, the better”. Warren, the Massachusetts senator, is 66.
“I would like somebody very much who is not in the baby boomer generation. Somebody who’s in this new, upcoming generation,” Dean said.
Incidentally, Senator Cory Booker is 47, and has passed the first test of becoming a nominee’s VP choice: assisting the presumptive nominee in dodging questions about the VP pick.
