Rep. Barry Loudermilk invoked Jesus during a floor speech before the House of Representatives as Democrats seek to impeach President Trump.
“Before you take this historic vote today, one week before Christmas, I want you to keep this in mind: When Jesus was falsely accused of treason, Pontius Pilate gave Jesus the opportunity to face his accusers,” said the Republican from Georgia. “During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than the Democrats have afforded this president and this process.”
Loudermilk, 55, spoke before a scheduled vote on two articles of impeachment against Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
“Our founders knew that a government without constraints could accuse anyone of any crime at any time, even without compelling evidence,” Loudermilk told the House, later continuing, “On November the 14th, Speaker Pelosi informed the press that the president should prove innocence when she stated, ‘Mr. President, if you have anything that shows your innocence, then he should make that known.'”
Loudermilk is a third-term congressman representing Georgia’s 11th District, which encompasses a large suburban area of Atlanta. He asserted that Democrats had not given a fair hearing to Trump during the December House Judiciary Committee hearings.
“The Constitution also guarantees that the accused can call witnesses to testify on their behalf, but the Republicans and the president were continually denied that right throughout this process.”
