Putin won’t survive the war and could be toppled before it ends, top Ukraine official says

A Ukrainian official believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “unlikely” to survive the war in Ukraine, which has been underway since February earlier this year.

“It’s unlikely that he survives it,” Ukrainian Maj. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov told the War Zone. “And currently, there’s active discussions happening in Russia about who’d be there to replace him.”

The major general also stated that Ukraine is “striving for victory over the enemy,” but that doing so can only be accomplished by pushing Russia back to Ukraine’s boundaries in 1991, when the country won independence. While he believes that achieving this could be done by Ukraine sometime next year, he refrained from detailing specifically when it will be done.

The war between Russia and Ukraine has lasted for over eight months, with Ukraine continuing to fight back against the invading country. Around September, Russia resorted to purchasing weapons, including rockets and artillery shells, from North Korea in order to replenish its arsenal, according to the U.S. Defense Department.

Russia has offered to stop bombing Ukraine’s electric grid in exchange for territory from the smaller country, according to a top Kremlin official. The offer came shortly after Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that Ukraine is expected to receive advanced U.S. air defense systems in early November.
