Upper Marlboro resident Caesar Adigwe, 54, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for stealing more than $530,00 from a Virginia nonprofit that served abused, neglected and at-risk youth.

Adigwe served as the executive director of the Chantilly nonprofit Residential Youth Services from October 2004 to April 2008. He pleaded guilty in April to mail fraud and failure to collect and pay taxes.

Authorities say Adigwe opened an account in the nonprofit’s name and deposited nearly $350,000 in contributions to RYS into the account. He used the embezzled funds for his own mortgage payments, his children’s college tuition and personal travel expenses, court records show.

Adigwe also used one of the organization’s credit cards to pay other expenses and opened lines of credit in RYS’ name and didn’t pay employment taxes withheld from RYS employees.
