Comedy shows to help fireman

Cancer isn?t funny.

But friends and family of Havre de Grace firefighter Vince Way will join together to share some laughter at Tracy?s Comedy Club on Oct. 20 and 21, raising money for Way?s battle against cancer.

Diagnosed in 1998 with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, then recently with diffuse large cell lymphoma, Way?s only chance of survival is a bone marrow transplant, according to his sister-in-law Susie Angelucci.

None of Way?s relatives were found to be a match.

Members of the Havre de Grace Ambulance Corp and the Susquehanna Hose Company, both of which Way is a member, are determined to find a suitable marrow donor.

The Ambulance Corp will host a bone marrow testing drive from noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 22, using testing kits that cost $52 each.

“We have raised an incredible amount, almost $17,000,” said Mark Hemler, president of the Ambulance Corps.

Hemler said with the money raised so far, in addition to a donation of test kits from Johns Hopkins Hospital, almost 600 people can be tested.

Larry Stevens, owner of Tracy?s Comedy Club, will donate 50 percent of the profits from each Oct. 20 or 21 ticket bought by a firefighter, paramedic or police with identification proving their profession to a fund that benefits Way.

The October shows will feature comedian Paul Venier.

“[Firefighters] put their lives on the line every day,” Stevens said. “It was the least I could do.”
